10 Classic Movies to Snuggle up with this Winter

Even as a little kid I loved classic movies.  The glamorous women, the dashing gentlemen, the snappy dialogue… it’s a testament to the talent of the actors, writers, and directors that these films can be so entertaining without all the special effects we’re used to seeing in movies today.

Snuggle up with a cup of cocoa or glass of wine and check out 10 of my all-time favorite classic movies.

1.  All About Eve

Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night.

This is  probably my number one favorite classic movie.  Look at this badass.  Bette Davis plays Margo Channing, a diva of the Broadway stage.  When young Eve Harrington, one of her biggest fans, comes onto the scene, she threatens Margo's career and personal life in ways Margo couldn't have imagined.  Marilyn Monroe also makes an appearance in this film, and Bette Davis's one-liners are sassy and stinging, as always.

2.  Sunset Boulevard

All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up.

One of the first scenes in the movie is former silent film star Norma Desmond waiting at her dilapidated mansion for the undertaker to come and perform a funeral for her pet monkey.  It only gets weirder (and more amazing) from there.

3.  The Seven Year Itch

When it gets hot like this, you know what I do?  I keep my undies in the icebox!

Surely you're familiar with Marilyn's white dress billowing around her as she stands on the subway grate?  This is Marilyn Monroe at the height of her stardom.  Honestly, this isn't my favorite film of hers (Some Like it Hot and How to Marry a Millionaire are better, IMO), but it's worth it to actually see the movie from which this iconic scene was born.

4.  Rear Window

Intelligence.  Nothing has caused the human race so much trouble as intelligence.

Confined to a wheelchair after breaking his leg, Jeff doesn't have much to do except observe his neighbors through his rear window.  One evening, Jeff becomes convinced that one of his neighbors has murdered his wife.  This is one of Hitchcock's best and most suspenseful films.

5.  Stage Door

We started off on the wrong foot.  Let's stay that way.

This film showcases several of the great actresses of their time: Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, and Lucille Ball, among others.  The women are all aspiring actresses living in a boarding house.  Their wildly different personalities shine as they experience triumphs and tragedies in the world of show business.

6.  Gone With the Wind

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

Scarlett O'Hara is another female who doesn't have time for your shit.  After the Civil War destroys her home and everything she's known, her strength and resilience pull her through.  If you haven't seen this movie, you're missing out on one of the greatest films of all time.  It's worth watching just for the antebellum costumes.

7.  Casablanca

Here's looking at you, kid.

War.  Romance.  An exotic locale.  Handsome men.  This is one of the most classic of classic movies.

8.  A Streetcar Named Desire

Hey, STELLA!

Take a good look at young Marlon Brando.  They don't make 'em like that anymore.  The characters in this play-turned-film are fascinating and, at times, disturbing.  You'll be surprised until the very end.

9.  The Philadelphia Story

The time to make up your mind about people is never.

You've already seen Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart on this list and they are dynamite on the screen together.  The Philadelphia Story is an early romantic comedy about a socialite whose ex-husband and a reporter show up and throw a wrench into her upcoming wedding plans.

10.  Roman Holiday

Princess Ann:  Is this the elevator?                                                 Joe Bradley:  This is my room!

You're probably familiar with Breakfast at Tiffany's.  I like to think of Roman Holiday as the "other" Audrey Hepburn movie.    It's about an American Princess who escapes her security detail and falls in love with a reporter.  It's cute and charming with beautiful scenery.

Sunset Boulevard and The Seven Year Itch are available on Netflix as of Dec. 2016.  The others you can find on Amazon.

P.S. Can Netflix please add a Classic Movie category to their browsing options???  I'd love an easy way to discover some great classics I haven't seen.

What are some other movies you would add to the list?
