Baby Book Club - October 2016

Lillian’s pick this month is Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes.

Kitten's First Full Moon is an adorable story about Kitten, who sees her first full moon and thinks that there is a bowl of milk in the sky, which she tries her hardest to drink.  She’s a persistent little kitten and her attempts to get to the bowl of milk are quite humorous.  Eventually, she heads back home and finds a wonderful surprise waiting for her on the porch.

When I first picked up this book, I thought it would be more appropriate for Lillian once she got older, but it’s one that she keeps choosing again and again at storytime, and it holds her attention through the whole book.  Lillian’s reactions to Kitten’s mishaps are so fun to witness.  She says, “uh-oh” and “meow” every time we read it.

This is one book that Mommy doesn’t mind reading over and over, because it has an actual storyline, and the illustrations are beautiful.  I love the bold black lines and shades of gray, and so must the literary community because this book won the Caldecott Medal in 2005.  I also appreciate that this is a sturdy board book, so it stands up to tiny hands and multiple readings.

A few ideas to discuss with your child when reading this book:

What does Kitten want?

Why can’t she get it?

Have you ever wanted something that you couldn’t have?

What did you do?

How do you think Kitten feels when … ?

What shape is the moon?

What color is the moon?
