Why I Carry a Designer Purse as a Diaper Bag (and How I Keep it Organized!)
When it came time to select a diaper bag, I agonized. You see, I have an obsession with designer handbags. I was devastated that I wouldn’t be able to carry them anymore because I’d need to use my diaper bag instead. I searched and searched for a diaper bag that I felt was stylish and functional, and I was coming up empty. There were a few that I considered, but I wasn’t excited about any of them. I was just disappointed that my purse collection would be collecting dust for the next several years. It took some creativity, but I finally figured out how to get the organization and functionality of a diaper bag while still carrying a designer bag that I loved.
After lots of research, I settled on a Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM (the largest size). I wasn’t sure how much gear I would need to be toting around, so I figured the bigger, the better. If it isn’t full, it can be cinched up on the sides for a sleeker look. But personally, I love how wide it opens at the top. I can see everything at a glance and quickly grab what I need.
Side note: I bought the Neverfull for a discounted price on eBay. I almost never pay full price for my designer bags anyway, but I knew this one may be getting a little more wear and tear than usual.
Once I settled on the Neverfull I found this nifty bag insert on Etsy. It’s specifically made as a diaper bag organizer, so in addition to lots of pockets, it’s got elastic loops on either side to hold bottles and sippy cups upright. The organizer has a stiff base, and is made with nice thick canvas so I don’t worry about crumbs and spills getting into the bag itself. Since the exterior of the Neverfull is made of coated canvas, it wipes up easily. Knowing the bag is easy to keep clean inside and out is one more reason I chose to invest in a Louis Vuitton as a diaper bag. I’ll be able to use it long after my babies are out of diapers.
The Neverfull GM has a large side pocket, which is where I store MY things. I conceded to give up my bulky LV wallet and instead switched to this sleek card carrier. I can easily throw this, my car keys, and my phone into another bag on those rare occasions when I’m flying solo. The Neverfull has a little D-ring attachment on the side where you could clip your car keys for easy access, but I snapped a travel size hand sanitizer there instead. #momlife
Some may think it’s insane to spend that kind of money on a “diaper bag.” But again, I can use it as more than a diaper bag and will still be able to use it after my kids have outgrown diapers. Most importantly, I carry it every. single. day. Why shouldn’t I carry a bag that I really love?
