Now that Thanksgiving is over, I don’t have a legitimate excuse to stuff my face anymore.  Between leftover Halloween candy, vacation, and Thanksgiving I’ve gotten waaay off track in my eating habits.  And since the weather’s gotten colder we’ve no longer been enjoying our 3 mile evening walks as a family.  Needless to say, I’ve gotten a little… fluffy in the past month or so.  I’m not too worried about it, though, because right after I had Lillian I discovered the perfect workout for busy moms.  It only takes 30 minutes a day, and it offers enough variety that I don’t get bored and quit.

21 Day Fix

You’ve probably seen the infomercials.  The idea behind the program is that it takes 21 days to build a habit.  If you can stick with it for 3 weeks, you will want to continue your healthy new lifestyle.  21 Day Fix is a series of 30 minute workouts that you can do at home, plus a meal plan that relies on portion control using a set of color-coded containers that come with the program.  This is a product from Beachbody, so if you’re really serious you can sign up on their website to get a coach.  I had a coach when I first began working out post-partum, and just having her there to hold me accountable really helped me get back on track and lose the baby weight, but a coach is definitely not necessary.

The DVDs consist of seven 30 minute workouts ranging from cardio to weights to yoga.  There are modifications of each exercise to tailor them to your current abilities.  I found the workouts to be challenging but enjoyable.  It helps that you have a different workout for each day of the week.

The meal plan is a bit more complicated.  You use your current weight to calculate the number of calories you need each day, and the program guide tells you how many of each container you can have throughout the day.  For example, the red container is for protein.  You might be able to have 3 red containers a day.  If it fits into the container, you can eat it.  It’s easy once you get the hang of it, but it’s a lot of planning and prep in the beginning.  I did the meal plan right after I had Lillian, but once I was back to my regular weight range I dropped the containers and just did the workouts.  The containers did help me to understand proper portions, though, which I was able to translate into a healthy eating lifestyle.

The third piece of the total 21 Day Fix plan is Shakeology.  This is not a required part of the program, but I highly recommend it.  Shakeology is a meal replacement shake that is loaded with all kinds of good-for-you stuff.  More to the point, it’s filling and delicious.  I have a major sweet tooth, and I was able to kick my craving for sweets by drinking the shakes.  You can find tons of Shakeology recipes on Pinterest.  I have a few that I plan to share with you soon.
